Bolster type breachplug with tang
« on: February 24, 2012, 05:03:07 AM »
I have aquired  one each  1 1/2 X 48 inch  &  1 1/2 X 60 inch  barrel blanks . I wand to make these as percussin log rifles . What I would like to use is a bolster type breachplug and a backaction lock .One right hand and one left hand . Where can I buy these plugs?  Thank you for staying on the subject and answering my question.

I would not use a BA lock on heavy rifle.
1 1/2"  patent breech will have to be custom made. There is someone who does this and its on a post on this web site somewhere but I did not book mark it.
This is the best option with a standard lock. BA locks take a lot of wood out of the wrist.
These rifles will weight 20 pounds + and wrist strength is a concern.

BA locks were used all the time for late rifles. Bolsters and snails.

So often with heavy barrels, the late percussion target gun, there is such a thin shell of wood, it make thee wonder how they are held together.

We're assuming that the guns will be heavy.  Maybe he's building a 2 bore.  In that case they had better be heavy.  ;)  J.D.K.

I'm curious, what calibres are these barrels?   You will have plenty of barrel wall thickness to support a drum.    Am curious, why would you want a back action lock?...........Don

Don they are .50 & .54 cal.  If i use a drum would it be a good idea to counderbore the barrel, for the drum ,so it would have more support? I started this post to get the pros and cons on a backaction lock. thanks for the replies.

Here's a link to The Gun Works.

http://www.thegunworks.com/GunIndex.cfm

Click on "Custom Gun Building Parts" then "Breech Plugs". Scroll down to nearly the bottom and they list one for up to a 1.75" barrel but alas, no bolster.

Maybe make them flint log guns.

Contrarily, I like the idea of using backaction locks.  I envision something like a Wesson rifle, with no forend (see Ned Roberts book for lots of examples).  You'll probably have to either make or have a machinest make the breeches.

Then make an underhammer.
Or buy an action from from Pete Allen.
The Wessons were an action not just a lock and a breech.

Actions similar to this date to the 1840s at least.
