James G. WALLACE Information Sought (Photos Added)
« on: April 03, 2012, 05:35:57 PM »
I am looking for additional information on a James G. WALLACE, a gunsmith, born approx. 1820. His wife was Martha and his father was George. He was taught by Pheosolos Bell in eastern Tennessee. Any information will help with me research. I have the information found in Mr. Whisker's booklet on Tennessee gunmakers and Jerry Nobles' "Notes on the Southern Rifle".  Checking to see if there is anything else.

Top and bottom rifles are by James G. Wallace. The 2nd from the bottom is by P. Bell (One of his last and dated 1855), the 2nd from the top is by W. H. Bell of Ft. Monroe, VA.  Wallace was Bell's student and the three rifles (P. Bell, and the two Wallace rifles) remained in the Wallace Family until recently.

I can't add any information other than to say that I have examined rifles by both J. G. Wallace and P. Bell and found their work similar, as would be expected of a master and apprentice.  Both were very pleasing in architecture.

Thanks for the comment.  I plan on bringing two of each to display at the Norris Show on the 20th and wanted to write up a little something about each of the makers.

Nice rifles.  Sorry I can't help with info on the makers.  The only info I would have would be from the books you already mentioned.  Looking forward to seeing them at the show.
