Buttplate wedding band

What do you use to file in a wedding band feature on a buttplate? A knife file?

I use a three square file that's been made safe on one side (had the teeth ground off).

If there's no remnant of a wedding band, I use a flexible , thin 6" rule to deeply scribe the beginning of the pattern. Next a "V" file is used to follow the scribe until the proper depth is reached, then the radii are rounded  using a triangular file. . If the BP tang is faceted, the flats are rounded before starting.....Fred

I too use a tri corrner file. If you have a band saw, roughly cut out a block of wood to the shape of the buttplate profile. Doesn't have to be presice, just square.  This will keep your cuts perfectly square. Lightly clamp it on top and just touch the first cut on the forward edge (tang side) to mark it. Slide your pattern block back, and now you can file this cut to the proper depth, and finish off the other side to match.
