Ez,
There is a Matthew Gillespie rifle in the Bill Iviy's book on N.C. rifles with no buttplate, as well as a John Gillespie.  Other John and Harvey Gillespie rifles in Ivy's book have buttplates.

Ez sorry, been busy today and didn't see your question. I have two Gillespie patterns the Mathew is after my Mathew rifle and it has no buttplate. But Mathew made them with and without buttplates. The other pattern is one of a rifle that Mathew's son Harvey made and it has a buttplate. I have never seen one of his rifles without a buttplate.

I have seen several of his brother John's rifles without buttplates and some with them.
