I usually make mine out of old shaving brushes. A lot of old shaving brushes, and some modern ones are/were made of hog bristles. If you have ever used one of these you know why they wind up in a yard sale. The best shaving brushes are made of badger, not hog, bristles. For the most part all shaving brushes are made with a handle of horn or ivory, or in modern times plastic. Occasionally you will find one with a wooden handle but not very often. The bristles are held together with some sort of heavy bodied glue. I just cut the glue so I have a small bundle of bristles and glue them in the hollowed out end of a small antler, or horn, or even a rolled piece of brass or iron. Although hog bristles work poorly for shaving brushes, they work just fine as a pan brush.
