This year’s five-day Conner Prairie Hornworking class will emphasize the working of horn materials to complete a southern style, multi-banded horn and at least one pressed horn accoutrement item such as a spoon or fork.  The class is being offered as a part of Conner Prairie’s 23rd Annual TRADITIONAL ARTS & ARMS MAKING WORKSHOP.  Dates for the class are Monday, October 8 through Friday, October 12, 2012.  Spots are still available, but are filling fast, so do not delay in making your plans to attend.

This five-day class taught by Art DeCamp, will focus on each participant making a Southern Style banded powder horn with an applied horn tip.  The lathe work necessary to make and fit applied horn bands, turned horn tips, plus the wooden butt plug will be learned and practiced by each participant.  Participants will have time to learn basic lathe turning operations in making a banded, applied-tip horn.  As Time permits during the week, an introduction to heating and shaping of horn will be taught as participants can also expect to make a pressed horn item along with their completed Southern Style powder horn.

The class will discuss the history, and varieties of Southern style horns, along with how to select the proper horn, turn and fit applied horn bands and the use of a lathe for this purpose.  In addition, shaping, scraping, finishing and coloring of horns, will be presented.  Original antique horns and photo references will be used to expose participants to historically correct examples.

Anyone interested in learning the skills needed to heat, press, shape and turn horn into useful items should plan on attending this week-long course.  You will be working in safe, well-lighted conditions on excellent equipment.  The classrooms at Conner Prairie are the best anywhere for learning these skills.  The skills learned and the chance to see and use the proper equipment for the jobs performed will give you the knowledge necessary to continue horn work on your own, and to assess the types of equipment needed to work on your own.  A list of required and optional tools will be provided upon class registration.

Your instructor is Master Horner and author, Art DeCamp who is well known for his quality screw-tip horns and is very well-versed in making other horn items.  He will be assisted by Dr. Jim Pease, a “Freeman” member of the Horn Guild who is also very knowledgeable and skilled at horn work.

Participants will leave the class with a completed powder horn and at least one special horn accoutrement.  The value of these items will easily be worth the cost of the course.
