Please do post a picture of that lock, both sides if possible. I haven't seen a Sutter lock in 40 or more years.

Your lock is not a Sutter.  It is one of the repro kit locks with the cast in engraving.  I still have two of them in their original kit form.

This is a real Sutter lock.

Steg,
I happened to be at the Ohio Gun Collectors show this weekend and there was a half stock rifle with a W.G. Sutter lock on it. The rifle was pretty non descript, and over priced, but I recalled your post and the name jumped out at me.

No,
I'm afraid I didn't make note of whose table it was on. It is such a large show it is impossible to recall. The OGCA show will be held at the Robert's Center, near Wilmington Ohio, again in March.

Anybody ever see a Bill Large barrel with very wide grooves, and narrow lands. A friend of mine bought a full stock Hawken flinter years ago, with such a barrel on it. Our club never found another gun that could outshoot it. When my friend asked Bill about building him a new barrel with the same detentions, Bill got pretty evasive, and refused to cut such a barrel. The barrel was 1-1/8" across the flats, 38" long, .54 caliber, one turn in about sixty inches. Just a glimpse of the muzzle of this gun told you this wasn't one of Bill's regular barrels.

It's a modified Pope system and Bill and I tested the first one on a rifle he made that was used for such purposes. Over the years it probably had 50 or more different barrels on it and all with the same breech. The thing I liked about these barrels was that even with a tight ball/patch combination, they loaded easily.
There are a number of these around and many of them are 58 caliber and on rebarreled Civil War rifles.I had the first Enfield with one of these barrels and it was the 39 inch 3 band rifle and was a match winner with ball or hollow base bullets of full weight.

Bob, funny you would mention .58 cal. in regard to these barrels. My buddy Chuck Bradshaw the owner of this Hawken with the odd W. Large barrel, wanted another barrel to build a late style half stock version of the earlier full stock. He contacted Bill, and ordered the barrel. As I said Bill was a little reluctant  to make the barrel for some reason. Bill said that .58 cal. had better ballistics, and tried to sell Chuck on a .58 cal. barrel. Now, Chuck is just about  as muley as Bill, so the fight was on. Bill finally sent Chuck the barrel. And, I'm sure you guessed it was .58 cal.. Chuck had a fit and sent it back with a scalding letter. Bill let him know if he wanted a W. Large barrel in the future he would have to buy if from somebody that had an extra one, and he hoped it would be in .58 cal.. The joke turned out to be on Chuck because he built the beautiful little half stocked late Hawkens on a beautifully made barrel he got from Les Bauska in Montana, and although it shot like a dream, it never shot as consistently as the old full stock with Bills barrel on it.

hi,i'm new to the forum.my shooting buddy passed away 4 weeks ago,and left me one of his black powder rifles.he had 6 he built, all with w.m.large barrels.the one i have here in front of me has the 8 wides groves and narrow lands.its a 50 cal, with a 31 inch barrel.burl tiger maple stock and 'i think' a sutter lock.the markings are w.m.large,with  j.j.j.j. underneath, and a L under the js.any input would be helpfull.james and i built bench rifles, for years, but we shot as much blackpowder as conventional.he shot a 45 cal. with a large barrel, and it shot round balls as well as anything i have ever shot.
