Bob, funny you would mention .58 cal. in regard to these barrels. My buddy Chuck Bradshaw the owner of this Hawken with the odd W. Large barrel, wanted another barrel to build a late style half stock version of the earlier full stock. He contacted Bill, and ordered the barrel. As I said Bill was a little reluctant to make the barrel for some reason. Bill said that .58 cal. had better ballistics, and tried to sell Chuck on a .58 cal. barrel. Now, Chuck is just about as muley as Bill, so the fight was on. Bill finally sent Chuck the barrel. And, I'm sure you guessed it was .58 cal.. Chuck had a fit and sent it back with a scalding letter. Bill let him know if he wanted a W. Large barrel in the future he would have to buy if from somebody that had an extra one, and he hoped it would be in .58 cal.. The joke turned out to be on Chuck because he built the beautiful little half stocked late Hawkens on a beautifully made barrel he got from Les Bauska in Montana, and although it shot like a dream, it never shot as consistently as the old full stock with Bills barrel on it.
