Made a Trigger! I Think?
« on: June 10, 2012, 10:28:31 PM »
Here is my first attempt at making my own triggers. The one on the left is mine. The other is from TOTW. Thats's a quarter for size.
I spent about two hours on a job that probably only takes you guys 20 minutes, but it was my first. It's rough made, but any suggestions or critiques would help make the next one better.

Eric, is that peened or did you solder/braze a shoe (finger pad) in place? When I peen one I leave the blade square while cold-forging the shoe, then cut away the extra iron behind the shoe.  Then if I want a curl I  heat it up to orange and bend it hot.  The one you made is unusual in that is has a crook instead of a gentle curve and the shoe should taper also.

Here's a curled one

It was peened. It just sort of evolved. I first peened it the wrong way. :-[ The fold is a result of the correction. I think I'll name it a Burke Cty. Dirt Dauber trigger.

I've made triggers both ways...cold forging and soldering a shoe and prefer the cold forging. Below is a cold forged trigger w/ a somewhat nice contour. I contour the .100 thick plate and then do the cold forging. The portion forward of your  trigger shoe is unnecessary stock and really interferes w/ the peening. I use a 3/8" dia. hardened rod struck w/ a hammer. A couple more and you'll see what has to be done...good luck....Fred

Guys,

For my triggers I leave the blade about 1/4 inch too long and shape it rather thin.  Then after the trigger guard is installed I forge the curl on the end of the trigger blade until it just clears the trigger guard bow.  Of course the degree of curl is determined by the amount that the trigger needs to be shortened to clear.

Third attempt! Not finished. Cold forged. I found that tutorial from Eric V. A. I won't even bother posting #2. What a disaster!  :P  :-[

Number 3 is a little long! You will need a huge trigger guard!  ;D

I left it, and made it long, to allow for modification later. Might want to add a fancy curl. I can always shorten it, but its harder to lengthen it.

That's one o' them traditional Schützemgüten 4-finger triggers, right?  :P

Looks like you definitely got it down now hoss! I'm gonna have to try this on my next rifle now!
