Ash pistol

For a change of pace, I thought I would tackle a nothing fancy pistol. Here's what I ended up with. The curly ash blank came from Tom Fornicola. The lock is a small Siler. The 40 cal Rice barrel is 3/4"x12". The stock pores were filled with Timbermate ebony filler then sanded back, then stained with LMF nut brown stain. The finish is Permalyn rubbed back with rottenstone. The nose cap is horn. The metal is rust blued using Mark Lee's Express Blue.









It's a companion piece to this rifle I built last year.

That is one nice piece of wood!  The horn tip is a nice touch also.

Very attractive pistol in a great piece of wood. I like how the curl, combined with the ash grain, almost makes a checkered look on the piece.

Nice piece of wood. You did well to keep it elegantly simple. I like working with ash, but not for detailed work or inletting. You did a fine job.

That pistol is stunning.  The finish is stellar.  Makes me want to dig out the ash pistol stock I have with a 15" .45 cal. barrel already inlet.

The metal is rust blued using Mark Lee's Express Blue.

When you say the metal was rust blued, did you mean cold blued, or rusted then boiled to get rust blue.
I wasn't aware that Mark Lee's Express Blue, was a rusting agent.

With the Express Blue, you heat the metal, swab the solution on, boil it, then card it off. If you don't boil it, it stays brown and will continue to after rust if you don't neutralize it. So, I guess you could call it a hot rust blue.

Thanks David. The Timbermate filler really contributed to the finish. You thin it a bit with water, slather a coat on, hit it with a heat gun to dry it quickly, and sand it back (it sands easily). Repeat the process if needed. I only found it necessary to do one coat.
