Nate, just back up a little more, and you can stand on the stone wall to load that fowler! However, I imagine these were loaded in a fairly horizontal position, in a punt boat, or in the rushes.
I have seen a number of originals that diagonally spliced the forestock on just after the entry thimble. I think this was more the norm than not, with economy of labor and material.
