Taylor, yes the base was drilled through with a 1 ¼” spade bit. Once turned round between centers it was chucked up in the late and drilled. Then using a four jaw chuck, expanding grip, both ends were turned to fit the horn and the design was turned.
SligoBill, I have never seen one that was not drilled through. I did see one that had both tips drilled and a solid base supposedly so one end would carry powder and the other side shot. I would think that would be heavy and awkward as in having to turn the horn around to pour shot, assuming the powder was in the front horn.
