who should I use...
« on: August 12, 2012, 07:47:29 AM »
to inlet a barrel and rr hole? I just received a Colerain .50 cal tapered, 44" octagon barrel (with breech installed). I also have a stock blank that needs the above. To whom do you recommend this project?

He's a member of this board.  You should be able to get his email from the member's section.

Where are you from.   Consider shipping costs.   Dave Keck is east coast.    Dave Rase is west coast.

And, of course, if you have never let in a barrel in the first person, you could do that.

I never have, and I am reluctant to attempt it. Seems awfully daunting at this point.

I learned a lot about basic longrifle design on my first rifle, by laying out a pattern, hand-inletting the barrel, calculating the ramrod groove and drilling the hole.  Then after I had eyes to see, I had to re-learn some of it.   ;D

I just inlet my first barrel, a 42" swamped Colerain, .45 cal. and it was intimidating. I used Long John's method of laying out the barrel on the stock, (Thanks John,)  and it worked pretty good, so well in fact, I will probably use that method whenever I inlet a barrel. My inlet is far from being as neat and clean as one inlet by a machine, but its mine. I like it. When the barrel is in, I cant even see my inlet! The next one will bee even better.  ;D

And just what is Long John's method of layout?
