running deer rifle.
« on: August 21, 2012, 07:20:45 PM »
I was flipping through an older american traditions magazine and saw a picture of the carving of the running deer rifle. Are there any other pictures published out there? Kind of an interesting rifle. What are the latest thoughts as to a location of where it may have been made and when?
I like the deer.

I recall seeing one like that in RCA vol. 1 or 2. I think Shumways "Thought on the K R" has it too.

I'm nto sure if there are any good photos published yet.  Wallace has some great pics which I assume are for his as-yet-unpublished book.  The gun was sold through Conestoga auctions iirc in Lancaster, they yanked the pictures almost immediately after the auction ended.  Currently it seems to be lumped in similarly to the Faber rifle, i.e. 'Virginia Valley.'  So somewhere south of PA seems to be one assumption, some folks do consider it might be out of the Reading area.  Kind of a toss up - it's really a one of a kind piece.  I feel like there were some good pics published somewhere at one time, but I can't find them now.

Is this the same rifle that is in the 2012 KRA Presidents Display CD?

The photo in the magazine did not do it any justice.  One of the most fascinating rifles I have seen.  It was in the KRA president's display, and I believe there is a photo CD for sale of the rifles.  I would assume that if you could get your hands on one of those....

Yes its the same rifle, but I would like to caution everyone that bought the CD (I did) that the photo copyright is owned by the Kentucky Rifle Foundation and should not be posted on ALR without their permission.

You can post photos you took, or have permission to post, right?

I was thinking of the running deer carving behind the cheekpiece of a Christian Beck rifle from Chambersburg, PA.
It is no.35 in Merrill Lindsay's "The Kentucky Rifle" book.

Yes, your photos or permission to post BUT to be proper you should have had permission to make the photos also.

I had purchased the presidents display cd at the CLA show this past weekend. and had not had a chance to look at it before I posted earlier today. It is on the CD and has really good clear pictures. I had noticed it last night when flipping through one of the American tradition books. I can see why some would say reading and others would say similar to faber. I wonder if it is a rifle that is truely a transitional piece from a gunsmith trained in pennsylvania and later moved south. Maybe a rifle built soon after a move. The brass studs are a neat detail.
