Speaking of Breechplugs----------

Hi y'all;got a question 'bout fitting breechplugs.Back in 70s,we were setting up breechplugs for 1/2" depth-from back of rifling to rear face of barrel.Plug cut accordingly,and fit til edge of threads just started to burnish.I am fitting up 3 barrels,2 for drum percussion,and 1 for flint.All new barrels and plugs.
So---what say ye??

Well,I rekkin the question is ----is this still the accepted way?I noticed that the new colerain barrels are drilled and tapped at 7/16 to rifling shoulder,and the b plugs are a little longer.Does it make any real difference if it is fitted at 7/16 as opposed to 1/2.Thanks,Dave

I believe the rule of thumb is the thread depth in the barrel is not to be exceeded by the size of the caliber. IE the .5o cal should not be breached less than a half inch in breach plug length. What is your barrel caliber? If the barrel is a 4o, .36, 32  I wouldnt worry.  If its a .5o or higher I would make it deeper. Just my thoughts.
