There is great advice here on this forum.  I drop by once in a while to learn something new, and I have been playing with these things since the late sixties!
And I'm always picking up something new.

I am just south of Chatanooga, between Chickamauga and La Fayette.  Open invitation... Come on up and we can have some fun in the shop.  I'm always working on something.  Pouches, horns, guns, reenactor stuff...

Welcome to the forum!

rwiegand;

Thank you for the welcome and the invite - we shall do that.

Yes, ALR is a goldmine, naw, make that platinum mine of information. Soon after registering on the site and posting this “hello” message I began back-reading older posts in the gun building forum. In fact I have done little else, often spending the whole day learning. I have only made it to early spring 2011 so far, page 75, but have gained a wealth of information and discovered that this organization is packed with accomplished artist-craftsmen. The level of knowledge and detail offered in the tutorials, the ultra high standards of craftsmanship and willingness of the member to share their opinion and technique is overwhelming. Like you several members have came forward and offered their valuable time to entertain a visit or offered sage and sound advice regarding my intended build. I look forward to learning more and through the simple act of exploring this site have gained much insight into the art and craft of gun building.

Regards; Dave

Hard as steel,huh???I bought an american black walnut plank from my past employer,more like brother after 10 years,and this stuff had been air drying in a steel barn in Grayson,Ga  for 20 years,was cut in south georgia somewhere.
I squared up and planed a 3'x6" board of it several years ago while still in grayson ,and was amazed at how heavy it was,finished dimension.When my bud Bob and I got the plank cut up into stocks,he was remarking how heavy.He got one of his wva walnut blanks,same pattern,and mine was nearly twice as heavy.Well,let me tell ya,twarnt no picnic working it either.Built a small buggy gun from the worst piece,really interesting flame,but lord,what a job.Currently working a 42" fullstock,not as much figure,but still like working steel.Mill bastard file works as good as 49 nicholson,well,sorta.lol.
Good luck with it.Loved my time in the Southland.
Dave up here on the mountain.

I'm new here but I've been reading other forums for years.  I'm in Atlanta and I've got a few books and rifles if you want to put your hands on things before you build.  I've even got a couple of Chambers kits if you haven't started your build yet.

Hello Mike;

I ordered my makings from Jim just a couple of days ago. Jim said he had a stock in inventory and would scoot that along to me pretty soon. Will have to wait a bit on the barrel but that is no big deal to me so not a problem. Looking forward to tweeaking the stock with my chainsaw, been sharpening it up just for that.

Thank you for the invite and sounds good. I don't know when I will be down atlanta way though but will PM you with plenty of notice when I do.

Cheers; Dave

The invite is always there.  I'm a mobilized reservist right now and I won't get home for a month or so.  After that I don't plan on going anywhere.
