What to do when age (81+) gives you the 'yanks' offhand
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:57:02 PM »
Ok there must be a few others out there that continue to struggle with their offhand shooting at age 81 or better. So, have you made any changes offhand that seemed to tighten up your offhand shooting results.   ???

Other than staying with rest matches, I found some slight betterment by holding the rifle more across my chest.

What say you..?  Anything that works for you that you would give up (or even sell ;D)

My problem is my eyes, not how I hold the rifle. ;D

Roger........Jimc2 has the right answer.   You need a higher fence between  your house and the neighbor.  You will find it
difficult to get an answer to your problem, you're just not as young as you used to be.  I'm 79 and I gave up that chunk
gun shooting.   Getting down on that shooting mat was not problem, it was the getting up that was the big bummer.
You have achieved something that very few people can do, you compete almost every week-end throughout the year.
And, you are competitive.......I am envious of what you do, just keep doing it.............Don

Same as others shooting off hand.  Build or save strength.  climbing that fence won't build the right muscles.

Position - forward hand (left if you are shooting right handed) under the rifle like carrying a sack of dog food not extended.

Dry fire - often.  Set triggers just cycle the triggers.  Dull flint or wood placebo.  at least once a week 5 dry fires with priming in the pan.  Don't let the dry fire go off if sight picture is not good.
Nothing is hard if you have the right equipment and know how to use it.  OR have friends who have both.

Roger you just have to keep at it. I know alot of us seemed to have problems on Sunday, maybe it was "fall fever" or a solar flare or something wierd like that. I know may have been better off throwing the balls at the targets!

Roger, my reccommendation would be to keep shooting and don't change anything or that's what I've done. I'll be 81 in Nov. and so far so good.  I do everything the same as I always have and am still able to win about 98% of the shoots that I attend. I've won more than 1400 shooting awards (more with pistol) in the last 50 yrs., when i started keeping track, and think that I shoot as well now at 81 as I did then at 31, maybe better.
