Any of you guys from the Phoenix area?
« on: September 25, 2012, 08:37:29 PM »
Moving to Phoenix next month and just checking out the black powder shooting.  Obviously there is the NMLRA Western, but I'm looking to make some local club connections.  I have contacted the Cactus Cappers and would like to hear from anyone else out there, particularly builders.

I am located in Tempe.  Don't belong to any group but at the Rio Salado Sportsman's Club there is a black powder group (Muzzle Stuffers).  They meet regularly on Sunday mornings.  If you go to the website below and pull up the range calendar you can find them.  This range is a major complex on the east side of Phoenix metro plex.  There is another large complex on the north side (Ben Avery Range) which has a website under Game and Fish Dept I believe.

That's quite a club from such a tiny, but nomal beginning - Great video, Jerry. I am MOST suitably impressed &, it is a club I would join if I lived even remotely close.

I especially appreciate & admire the Junior Shooting programs & especially the postion shooting program.

Daryl, I hadn't watched that video before! It is new this summer.  The third photo of the hunter education element is of me conducting a class introducing use of map, compass, and GPS.  Until recently I taught that class to about 500 students annually.  Had a lot of fun with it and brought more than a few adults around to believing in learning how to navigate so we don't have to go find them.  Arizona is a tough place to be lost.  During the summer it is absolutely as deadly a place to be lost as there is anywhere and the high country is pretty tough in the late hunting seasons too.

Thanks, guys.  I really appreciate the information!  I hope to run into you fellows sometime.  You can recognize me by my rifles that look like they were inlet with a hungry beaver.  I didn't really want to live in Phoenix (Prescott and Flag are much cooler), but that is where Phoenix Childrens Hospital and the job is.

Roger,

I'm in Mesa, that's where Rio Solado is located.
Also near the desert, so close to shooting in a NON organized area.
