What do i need to get started on my first kit build?
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:22:25 PM »
Morning all,

I am planning to start my first kit (Early VA style) build this winter. What have been some of your most important tools in doing this kind of work? I have a good deal of carpentry experience and tools for that but nothing for the finer type of detail work that I am sure this will require. I appreciate your insights and suggestions as I make my list of things to purchase.

I have narrowed my choice of "kit" down to two companies. I do have a decision making disorder when a large chunk of money comes into play..... I will not list them as i dont want to be rude in having people give their opinions online of which is better or not. But if i asked you to give your suggestions for a good Early VA style rifle kit, your input would be appreciated before I go and lay out the money. I may learn of one I have not looked into yet.

Thanks all in advance.

There's no one tool kit because of different approaches.  Most would want a drill press, which you probably have.  You will need files, needle files, and abrasives for finishing metal, a hacksaw and 3-corner file for dovetails.  6 chisels are needed ata  minimum.  Straight chisels at <1/8" wide (trigger bar, underlugs, and thimble tabs), 1/4" wide and 1/2" wide, and 2 gouges, one that fits the radius of the sear spring bend and another that fits the radius of the front of the lock nose.  After that, some use drawknives (unlikely in a precarve), planes, spokeshaves, etc whereas others prefer gouges and rasps for heavy work.  A set of cabinet scrapers will help and you'll need some half-round files or rasps for shaping.

Aside from the tools detailed, I like to use Gravers also.
They are HSS, and make great corners on inlets.

Magyar, did my first kit from a quality maker with the common tools in my garage.  However, I did make a commitment that whenever up against a task which required a better tool to pause long enough to get the correct tool. Choice of tools implies you have figured out how you want to proceed.  It didn't require that many purchases, and you are probably already better equipped than I.  Figured it was the best way to find out just exactly what was needed and that worked out pretty well.  Some of the special stuff you can probably make for yourself.  I did find that quality inletting chisels including selected gouges, skew and straight chisels were needed.  A small scraper is probably my most used tool to finish inletting barrel and tang.  Magnifying visor and a good light you can direct into the work are pretty important for me.  Hopefully you already have a suitable vise.

Only kit I used was a Chambers and I was pleased with the product.  Having gained a knowledge of the building process using that kit I build from a plank now.
