Swiss vs Goex
« on: October 16, 2012, 10:07:41 PM »
Acquired a fine Helmut Mohr sporting rifle (.575 caliber) at the September Friendship shoot. He gave me instructions about ball size and powder load, but he used Swiss powder calculations: 70g of 1 1/2 Swiss. I have never used or had Swiss but I have lots of Goex to get rid of.

Anyone know the conversion rate for Swiss vs Goex?

Swiss is somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% more powerful than Goex.  Some say 10 or 15%, and I've seen up to 30%.  In my .50 cal. rifle, 50 gr. of Swiss 3F does the job of 60gr. Goex 3F, for example.  Swiss is generally finer in granulation than Goex, so 2Fg is probably close to 1.5F Swiss.   Sadly, though, if you don't want to buy Swiss, I think you are better off just developing a Goex load from scratch.

Start with 70-80 gr of Goex and see how it works.
Bet it will work fine once the load is sorted out.  1.5F is very much like 2F Swiss in RB rifles from what friends have told me.

FWIW, I chronographed Swiss and Goex loads when working up a hunting load. I settled on 90 gr Swiss 3F which gives 2000 GPS MV in my .50 cal 38" barrel. I needed 110 gr Goex 3F to get the same MV.
