Nice old knife

Interesting old knife.  11" blade, 4 1/2" handle.  Guy approached me at the auction and
said he found one very similar to it in the woods when he was a kid.  I thought that was
interesting.  I took boiled linseed oil to the handle and it immediately removed all the
patina from the copper rivet..... :-[

Nice, most of these I have seen are ground down to a nub from much use.

Great knife, 4.5" is a bit close without a guard.

Was this poured pewter work done throughout the country or is it regional?

I had several southern rifles that had poured pewter nose caps. Maybe a " Pewter Age" ?

Knives with the poured pewter bolsters and decorative work are generally found to be post-Civil War factory produced knives.I seem to remember that Woods or Goodell patented a process for doing that on their cutlery approximately 1868.Some Lamson & Goodnow knives had handles with pewter bolsters and decorative work attached with a single rivet like that one.Manufacter and usage continued well into the early 20th century by many cutlery companies.Often times the pattern used was specific to a particular company.Gordon's book on knife makers illustrates several examples of that type work but none of that particular pattern.

  Considering the location of your find, could this knife possibly be associated with those folks pictured in your avatar?
  This theory is not without merit, considering the pewter/brass nosecaps on all of those Putneyville halfstocks.

Mr. Wog,  That's nice to think about.  I touched base with the son of the
estate where it's from and he had no recollection of the knife, but gave me
some nice historical information about Putneyville and the Shreckengosts.  Said
he would ask his sister who is a walking historical encyclopedia of Putneyville (oh wait that's you) to give me a call when she comes to town in a couple weeks.  Hopeful she can share something useful.
