"new member" access to the Old Board

On several occasions I have tried to search for or otherwise access an article or thread referred to in the new forums. I've been unsuccessful in login and registration attempts and get the following message,
"The registration function is disabled", or words to that effect.

Is there a way for newer members to access these resources in the old boards? Or am I incorrectly trying somehow?
