Were any original Hawken barrels pinned?
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:11:53 AM »
A friend of mine is a gun dealer and recently sold two original Hawkens for $25,000 and $40,000, I think it was.  He had a third in hand that he was skeptical about because the barrel was pinned rather than keyed.  I don't remember if it was a J&S or just a S. Hawken, nor even if it was halfstock or fullstock.  He passed on it, not thinking it was authentic.  He asked me if any Hawken barrels were pinned, and I can't find any photos that show pins.  Does anyone know if any original Hawken barrels were pinned?

I would say no  pins but anything is possible.

I have not seen it on a Hawken "plains rifle" and would rule it highly unlikely on a halfstock (duh to myself!).  Trying to recollect a fullstock Hawken with a fixed breech which may have had a pinned barrel.  It's in my head, now to find where I saw it.  Maybe Baird's book.

I have seen some of the "local" guns or squirrel rifles, as some call them, with pins instead of wedges

I would not recommend extracting any Hawken data from that particular piece. Nuff Said

I have been to Mr. Gordons museum on two ocasions and I think I saw at least one of the 30+ Hawken guns there with pins. Not sure but plan on stoping there again in March or Feb.  2013 and if I can remember I will make note of that.   Smylee

Just went through Mr. Gordons book and found all the Hawken guns in the book with keys. Other St. Louis makers are represented though and a few had pins but most of the others had keys .

There is a "squirrel rifle" in the JM Davis Museum that is pinned.
