I always use 0000 steel wool to knock off the shine then finish with a coat or 2 of Renaissance Wax. Never tried rottenstone, but maybe you have embedded rottenstone in the finish. Try a coat of paste wax (I like Renaissance) to see if it clears up the cloudiness. It can't hurt.

Did you wipe the stock with a damp cloth after you stoned it? I've never had that problem. I have used carnuba (sp?) wax over the stock after I rotten stoned it. It brings back a soft sheen. I'm not sure what you're after but the pre 64 winchester look is where I was going. Bob

if you are wanting to have the deep  debth and   mirror shine  do nothing to the finish but wax. anything else tends to dull it
