Rifle for Bob Roller Twigg Lock
« on: November 27, 2012, 06:46:40 PM »
I was lucky enough to recently acquire a Bob Roller, Twigg flintlock, number 7 of 10.  My dilema is what to build around it?  I know Twigg was known for his fowlers and pistols, but I am interested in building a rifle.  Doesn't have to be a Twigg type rifle, just something appropriate for this lock.  Any suggestions are welcome.

A full or half stocked English Sporting Rifle.  A blunderbus.

I have seen a few really nice 1790-era southern rifles built using that lock, although it is a bit fancier in appearance than typical export grade locks that would have more likely found their way onto the typical American longirlfe of the era.  It does sort of fill in the time gap between the Chambers Early Ketland and Late Ketland styles if you want to build something that falls into the mid 1780s-1800 timeframe and stick with an English style lock.  The plate size (still over 5 inches long) and shape are very close to some of the export Ketland locks of that era.  So really any southern style rifle you like from that era  - one of Shenandoah Valley schools, Rockbridge, SW Virginia, piedmont Carolina, even a really early Appalachian rifle from western NC or East TN - heck even something that might have come out of mid-Tennessee like Thomas Simpson's work, or a very early Kentucky made rifle.  Possibilities are endless.

Probably best not to build a rifle with it so pack it up and send it to me ;D I have one going on a 16 bore fowler. Am so impressed with the lock that I would love to have another one!

I am very interested in this topic. I have Roller's Twigg # 4. Like SR James, I have not decided how I will use it. All suggestions welcome.

I have not seen the Roller Twigg lock, but if it is similar to the Davis Twigg lock, I would offer the J. Lauck rifle on the KRA Vol. 5 as a possibility.

That lock is marked "Ketland & Co." and sparingly engraved, but the rifle is quite nice.

I have a Rice 44" B-weight 44" that Dave Keck inlet into a blank that might become an interpretation of this rifle, with the Davis lock, so I just might be a little prejudiced.

I bought a group of external parts from Davis for the Twigg and made
an upgraded mechanism for the modern day hunter/shooter. I do not
alter the shape of the external parts in any way so if you have a pre-
inletted stock you can use either.

I am waiting for Bob to finish one of these locks for me.  I intend to use it on a half stock English style rifle.  Many years ago I acquired a plank of dark Brazilian rosewood and I intend to use that for the stock.  With silver mounts, it should look good (if I don't screw it up).

HI Bob,
That sounds like an interesting possibility.  I know little about pistols styles.  Any suggestions?

Pletch,
For a number of years,I sent a lock to Germany for Helmut Mohr's
Boutet Target pistols and it was 99% identical to the L&R small Manton
and it worked fine and looked good.I can buy the external parts from L&R'
and make these for anyone. My cost on these parts is $75 each and the special
upgraded mechanism is $150 for the labor. The other lock I sent to Germany was
made from dies(moulds)that used an antique Bailes lock for the masters and these required
a lot of initial prep work before a lock could be made from them.I quit them several years ago
and started using the L&R small Manton (Bailes/Nock)as they are all nearly identical.
Let me know if you want one made up.All I require is the deposit for the parts and then
after the lock is ready,I'll notify you as I did with the Twigg lock.

Bob,
While I think it would be cool to own one of the little Mantons for a pistol, my first priority is to wisely use the Rolle/Twigg you built for me. Whether the lock ends up on a fowler or rifle, it deserves to be stocked by someone much more talented than me. I will be interested in the choice that SR James makes.

I purchased a lock from Bob in 1980 and competed with it for years. I have a 50 3x Haffner fox target that a guy signed "Yeah! You shot it with a flintlock that is fast as a percussion lock." I took that as an insult to the speed of Bob's lock...

Regarding English halfstocks, I built the rifle below a few years ago.  It has a swamped 31" barrel because my understanding is that such rifles usually had swamped or tapered barrels.  I have seen original halfstock folwers with octagon to round barrels that were also swamped.
My question is, did English halfstock rifles ever have octagon to round barrels or were they only used on fowlers?  If o-r barrels were used for rifles, were they tapered or swamped?
