Looking for a buttplate
« on: January 14, 2013, 12:47:27 AM »
Hello everyone,

I am looking for some hardware for a early Reading rifle.  The one I am looking at in RCA #22. I have checked the suppliers I have worked with in the past and the Reading styles they have are later styles.  The one on RCA #22 is 2 inches wide.  Any suggetions?

I have used Reaving Goehring's Jager/Transitional Ky #11 buttplate several times for early rifles. It 2 " wide with a larger octagonal tang. I usually shape mine down a bit to want I need. In looking at RCA #22 it might work for you.

Reeves #10 Buttplate is a Reading buttplate from an original, and is 1 15/16" wide.  Nice casting, and proper shape.

I see Reeves name here all the time, (I've not yet been to Dixon's fair).
What is his contact information or site or who handles his products?

Thanks.  John

Dane, My somewhat dated list has # 10 as Early Virginia, so maybe I need an updated list. Not sure.

It's really not a trip to Friendship without stopping by his booth, buying a set of furniture (like I need more  :D) and having a discussion (me mostly listening) with Reeves. He is a wealth of knowledge.

Tom,  I don't have his list, but was told that it was right for the RCA #26 that I'm working on.  It's not perfect, but very close.
It' actually a lot closer to the RCA #22 that we've been talking about.

I used to have a Goehring list, but seem to have misplaced it.

If anyone has one they could scan..... I'd MUCH appreciate it.

The #10 is an Early VA butt piece.   I have a whole drawer full of them.   It is so generic though, I would think you could use it for most any early rifle.

Here is a shortcut to the list of Reeves buttplates and trigger guards.  you must contact Reeves for pricing and availability.

Reeves #10 Buttplate is a Reading buttplate from an original, and is 1 15/16" wide.  Nice casting, and proper shape.

He told me its also the same as a Dickert and a VA rifle he examined.
I have a #10 on a rifle  that I beat out to 2.5" wide then reshaped to correct the flat cheekside contour and make it wider.

Thanks for your help everyone.  I called Reeves on Wednesday and ordered 10 and 11, will play with both and see what works.  Whichever one does not work will lead to another build.  Oh well.
