Flint Hammer
« on: December 21, 2012, 03:37:01 AM »
Hi all, Just made this up today. Got the idea from a thread in the <Black Powder Shooting> topic. Taylor Sapergia was nice enough to give me some guidance on making a Flint Napping hammer like the one he posted. Have a look c..

It looks really nice Duca.  There's a couple things I'd do to make it 'better', if I may.  File more of a chisel onto that left hand end of the copper so that you can direct a very small part of the hammer onto the flint.  And when I heat the bit end, I heat it up so that about 1 1/2" of the shank gets red too, and quench.  Then, repolish, and holding the heat 1 1//2" up from the end, watch the colours go down the shaft.  take the heat away when the tip is straw/brown, and quench if you like, or just let it cool by itself.  Looks to me like you got the tip a little too hot in the tempering stage.  you can do it over starting at the hardening stage, as many times as you need to to get the right temper.  Too soft, and the bit will bend.  Too hard, and it will fracture.

I like this style of tool because it fits the top jaw screw of the cock, and the three machine screws that disassemble the rifle.  It fits easily in the shooting bag too.

I made one similar to yours; Taylor was kind enough to furnish me with a copper rod.  As usual, however, yours looks much better than mine.

Taylor,

I think it was one of your long ago posts about a combination flint knapping hammer / screwdriver that gave me the idea to combine a bunch of necessary gun tools into one unit.  And, of course, I over did it, but the tool does the job.

Dave...there are tools, and there are tools.  You have a wonderful knack at producing utility and beauty at the same time.  I am humbled at the thought of having inspired it.
I made one of my simple copper and drill rod hammers/screw drivers for a blanket prize for our local rendezvous, a few years ago.  Except I polished the copper and engraved it.  It was won by a cap lock shooter, but he won't trade it back to me.  So I continue to use a crusty and stained old beater.
