A Westernized Tomahawk - headed to the CLA Show......
« on: August 07, 2008, 08:43:17 AM »
Well I'm not going but this is......
Side one of the drop.....

Side two.........

What I intended the piece to portray
it's a three "generation" tomahawk....An 18th Century maple handled eastern tomahawk with brass fittings that went west, the braintan grip and small beaded "flares" were added circa 1830's (they are based on a Missouri Warhawk carried by the Mandan Chief, Mato-Tope in a painting by Bodmer circa 1834), then the northern plains style beaded drop, with hawk bells and tin cone tinklers was added circa 1855-60.
The head is sealed with a braintan gasket like many originals making it smokable. The end plug and mouthpiece are made from deer antler - the mouthpiece is hidden by the rear beaded flare, which can be folded back to smoke.

The two knives are:
The on the left has a coyote jawbone grip, the right hand is a bear jawbone grip - both have buffalo rawhide wraps. The hair dangle on the bear jawbone is human - courtesy of my wife, Linda, who did the floral beadwork on the drop.....

Hope ya'll enjoy the look see.......and as always the real thing is better than the pics.......the odor alone adds a lot....... ;D

I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Chuck, sorry you will not be attending but would like to see the Hawk. Where should we look for it?

Chuck,
Your work is outstanding and inspiring.  Thanks for posting the pics.  I did not think it was possible but I found out last year at the CLA show, your work looks even better in person than in the pictures.
Cheers,
Ken

Chuck,
I got a chance to look at your hawk several times at the CLA show and it was simply outstanding.  Really nice work and your artistic hand shows.  The beaded drop just blew me away.  I thought I was looking at something in a museum out west.

First off - the Hawk is really done authentic- loads of work. I just have one question- when you have a Hawk like that is it very practical to have the big beaded flap on the back? it seems to me that it would be in the way if you were to really use it- right or wrong? Pinyone

Ken - thanks! Apparently the box it came in was real wrecked up - good thing I know how to pack!  ;D

Pinyone - yep lots of work on these. While I've seen a few references to them being used once the drop was added, in general they became status symbols rather than weapons - most of the drops  are post 1860 and even more so post late 1870's in the Rez Period when fighting was at very low level...In fact in the west by the late period many hawks had cast pewter heads, not something I'd want to get hit with, but not exactly a wood chopping tool

Great hawk Chuck...I saw it up close at the show and liked it very well...

I seem to recall ther medical reports from the Big Horn indicated a prediliction for death caused by a chop horizontally across the bridge of the nose eyes with an ax or hawk ....ouch...I suppose these were coups de gras hits, but they would have been very effictive...

Great looking hawk but the knife caught my eye. I like the way you put the rawhide to it.  A friend gave me a bear jaw to put a blade to. The bone is white. Any tips on dying it and putting the rawhide on???

Howdy Larry -

1) For dying bone and antler I use leather dye - light or medium brown and British tan make a good mix for a natural aged look. I've also dipped in black first to get down in the nooks and crannies to give an aged look. Dip in the black let set for a couple of minutes and wipe off the excess. Let it dry then soak for an hour or so in a brown/tan mix - I have no set mix ratio (just a little of one and a little of the other - wipe on and if looks good do the soak) and each piece comes out different........after all is dry I use a linseed oil based violin type varnish as a final finish - wipe on - let set for five minutes and then wipe most off - let dry in the sun......I use the same finish on the rawhide to "water proof it"

2) The rawhide is worked wet and sewn on using a baseball or whip stitch - I use a lot of real sinew or linen thread, but have been known to use imitation sinew....... To hold the rawhide in place while sewing and/or to match the contours I use hot mix hide glue when wanting to keep things historically correct - when going neo-Tribal (or just being lazy!  ;) ) I use super glue - the el cheapo stuff from Wally World seems to actually work the best - who knows why??? and at a buck for 5 or 6 tubes.........

hope this helps..........

BTW - the pipe hawk got posted on the Contemporary Makers blog!

Here's a pic of the bear knife with the sheath......

Thanks

www.crazycrow.com carries both the steel shank solid brass head tacks (I generally use the 5/16 low dome) and the solid brass brads come in three sizes.

On bone and antler I pre-drill - trim to length and glue in...

For pre-1870 solid brass square shank tacks currently the only source is www.thetrunkshoppe.com - not cheap but worth if dependent on your needs......

A little progress. The blade is forged from 1070 hex stock.
Lets see where it goes.
