Pistol Underlugs
« on: January 23, 2013, 09:00:26 PM »
I am in the process of building three pistols with 8'' barrels at the moment and was wondering how many underlugs are suitable for this application?  Because of the confined space could I get away with one, or is two the min?

If the caliber is reasonable (say <.50) you might be OK with one. . . but I'd try for two.

Its 45 cal, 7/8 barrel.  If two, is it better procedure to move them forward say close to muzzle and half way between lock and rr pipe?

I just looked through Thoughts on the American flintlock pistol, and it looks like most had 2 pins or keys , but some only have one. The ones with 2 have one about an inch or so back from the muzzle and the other between the entry pipe & lock pannel.

That sounds about right.  I just looked through my file of saved photos and found much the same thing.  A couple of them looked like the middle pin doubled to hold the entry pipe in place.

Thanks, Seems like the old ones I've seen they are all a little different.  I feel like I need tweezers to put these together  :o

I don't know about tweezers, but I learned to double-check everything on those short little forends.  Let's just say that I like walnut for pistol stocks for many reasons, including that I get it basically for free, and that it burns so well . . . .
