Yet another Vinegar & Iron dye question
« on: February 05, 2013, 04:30:09 PM »
Doom on me, I mixed my vin & Iron dye in a glass peanut jar that had a composit metal and plastic top.

The metal in the top rusted thru and the vin evaporated leaving me with about an inch of crud in the bottom of the jar.

Should I just restart the process in a new jar and wait a couple weeks, or can I dump some Vin in and have "Instant" dye?

I think that would work. Pour some in and test on a piece of scap.

Well you won't necessarily have instant dye since you need the vinegar to gas off the acetic acid but I always keep the junk from an old batch and add it to the new batch - no reason to waste it.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Yep, not instant, but after about 12 hours it will darken the leather a bit, just a bit......

washing and drying some steel wool to give it some new iron to eat on..
