I was truly amazed at the variety of builders people recommended when I posted this question the first time. I had expected 4 or 5 common names. The number of high end builders is truly astounding. I can see I have my work cut out researching the name already provide.

That said, it became clear from reading a lot of other posts on this forum that not many people have $10,000 to plunk down on one gun, not matter how fine a weapon it might be. In light of that I am re-posting the same question with a much lower spend limit. I assume that will eliminate a lot of builders that were previously recommended and may bring into play some newer entrants to the field of Flintlock building. The info will help me and lots of others who read these forum.

If you only had $2,500 to spend on having an American Style long rifle of the late flintlock era, say 1820 or so, who would you pick to build the rifle for you. If from a kit, who's kit, if from scratch would that change your choice of builder? Look forward to your thoughts.

Where do you live Dean?    Our show at Lewisburg, Pa. is coming up in about a week, there will be a lot of guns for sale
within your price range.  Actually, this is the best way to buy a gun, you can pick it up and actually see what you are getting for your money.............Don

Don

Unfortunately I live in Edmonton Alberta so the chance to handle a lot of different Flintlocks just isn't available. It is a much smaller sport here in Western Canada.

Dean, your question is still a little general.  I'd pick one guy for a Beck, another for a Lehigh, somebody different for a Bucks County rifle, etc.  Builders often become conversant in particular styles.  Maybe go to the Contemporary Blogspot and see what's there and by whom to get a better idea of what appeals to you.

What exactly are you expecting for the money?   Just a patchbox, depending on complexity , can add Much $ to a gun.  One option is to look over Track of the Wolf's offerings in your price range to get an idea of what is out there. Another is to select something like a Chamber's kit, and have someone build it for you.
That should fall within your range .

To all the folks that responded and those plus the builders that PMed me, thanks for all the great information. It gives me a real good idea of what is possible at 2,500 or less and there is some truly amazing work being done in that price range. I will be in touch for a shooter and will use the info from the other thread to look for a display piece. Thanks again.

I would suggest you make a trip to Friendship Indiana for the spring shoot. Lot's of rifles & makers there.
