? Leather for hunting pouch strap

What do those on the Forum recommend for the weight of leather for hunting pouch strap?

Some seem to use the same as the pouch (ie 3-4oz veg tan), seems like others use a heavier weight.

To me, logic says a very light-weight strap would be more comfortable, more conforming to the shoulder. On the other hand, a heavier, like a belt, would be more durable and better to carry a load.

Here are my thoughts on the matter.  If you need to use really thick leather to carry a heavy load, you may want to rethink your strategy while out in the field.  Most folks start out carrying far more than they need and it's a matter of trial and error, personal taste and individual needs that will determine what equipment and accessories go in the bag and what stays at home.  Before then though, there's only so much you can stuff in the bag, even if you're planning on an overnight hunt and a 2 inch wide, 3-4 ounce leather strap is plenty strong so comfort would be my concern when choosing the right material and weight for a bag strap.  Woven straps, if made correctly, are both strong and comfortable plus would save a little weight compared to leather.

Gotta agree with Bull on this one! 3-4 oz is plenty strong and that's what I use on my bag's,all 110 so far,not 1 complaint or issue. Any heavier and it gets a little stiff. It can be softened up,but 1-1/2' is plenty wide enough for strength.

Also pay attention to the way you attach the strap to the pouch. Use a "U" pattern as opposed  to stitching it straight across. I just had a bag I made fall off me because the strap tore from the stitching.

I always use the leather I made it out of...heaviest I use is 4-5 oz and thats pretty rare. 3-4 oz is my favorite, and never had a problem with a strap.

As to sewing them on, steer clear of sewing them on with an O or a square...it can create a perforated square that can tear out too.

To me it's more to do with what looks good than durability.  I like the look with a strap a little heavier than the material the bag is made from.  I like a strap about 5 oz most of the time.  I also like the strap to be softened up and really flexible.  Also, the width of the strap might have some influence on the weight you use.
