Small bag...
« on: March 10, 2013, 07:49:55 PM »
Wanted to build a bag of small proportions. This one measures 7" by 7 1/2" high. One piece back and flap with a single pocket inside. The hanger is linen tape dyed medium brown. A early 19th century knife is in a attached sheath. Used a forged buckle. The bag is a copy of an original from coastal Maine.

I like small, plain, no nonsense bags.  Big ones just get in the way and fancy just doesn't seem right in the woods.  Good work.

7 x 7 1/2 is just the right size.  Larger bags just get filled up with needless stuff, and unless you're portraying a "wealthy gentleman type," a fancy bag is way out of place.
Just my 3 cents.  (inflation, you know  ::))

The ones that seem to sell fastest at trade shows.. ;D

I did the Ancient  Ones and couldn't sell a single small plain bag that was HC.  All the sporting bags of larger size, with plenty of pockets, decorative flaps, fancy brass buckles or buttons - sold out in the first half of day one.  Evidently that was what the public wanted at that venue.  Maybe at a different show there might be different results.

Nice work.  What part of the coast did the original come from, if you know?
Strawberry Banke, Greenland and Falmouth

What I consider fancy would be one with tooled desigs or elaborate stitching and edging on the flap.  Also flaps cutouts backed with colored velvet or other similar material.

I confess that I find those types attractive, however, my personal pouch is a "D" shaped, 61/2 x 8" made from oil-tanned deerskin.  Strap is partly oil-tan deer, but made to appear as if it was repaired at some point with a 18 inch strip of heavy linen torn from my hunting shirt, folded double and crudely stitched.
Adjustment is with a hand forged iron buckle.   Like its owner, the bag looks to have spent seasons years in the woods, sleeping on the ground.  :-[

I have the brother of that  bag.  Where is Bristol?
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
