removing a lockplate stamped letters
« on: June 10, 2013, 10:40:03 PM »
I want to use  TOW's new  FDC lock for a build other than a  FDC I want to remove the Stamped  "Tulle" from the lock plate.
I'm thinking grind it out the fill with weld.
I know it will not file out.

BTW,Ive used this lock already and it very nice,Its about 99% PC.
Thanks ,alex E.

You can inlet a panel, and re-engrave your favorite maker's name.

Could also just inlay soft iron wire in the cast in lettering.

Alex, there are several locks that are very similar to TOW's (Davis) Tulle lock.  The Jack Haugh lock is virtually the same, and has no lettering.

Alex,
I used a pedersoli tower lock for a fowler and didn't want the cast in engraving and name. I had the engraving and name welded over, modified the lock plate dimension and then filed the plate into a round face style. Not a sign of anything anywhere.

I have "erased" cast-in engraving and stamps on several locks by laying weld over the top with a TIG welder, then file/grind/sand/ polish it out.  I'm sure a MIG machine would do the job just as well if used by a skilled person.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Alex I think most of the methods mentioned will work. I agree with the use of a tig welder. I have had several Siler plates filled in to make flat plates without the detail cast in the tail of the plate. Local shop charged me five dollars. Had to wait till he took a break to keep the cost down. I let him look at rifle I made kind of let him see what I wanted. I was a little worried about heat warping the plate but clamped the plate to a metal table and the plate was hardly warm when he finished the weld job. All it took was a little file work
the plate looked as if was made flat originally. Good luck with the method you choose.Tim
