Vise
« on: June 10, 2013, 10:51:50 PM »
Ran across this vise looking for something else. It appears to be exactly like the one I got from Woodcraft several years ago and I think I paid $50+ on sale. If its the same as mine its a decent vise, certainly not heavy duty for metal work but it has served me well once I made a set removal swivel jaws (out of hard maple) for it.  http://toolsandmore.us/shop-fox-d3125-parrot-vise.aspx?gclid=CNzJr9-g2rcCFZBj7Aody1IAeA

Bought that same vise a year ago and when rec'd, the moveable jaw wouldn';t move ....too much clearance between the screw and nut. They sent me a replacement and it's mounted on my bench but it's a lousy vise. Takes 3 turns of the screw to start the moveable  jaw to clamp.  Tried all sorts of adjustments and it still won't clamp w/o the part slipping. Don't like to " badmouth" a product, but this vise deserves it......Fred

Glad you spoke up Fred, haven't had that problem with the one I got from Woodcraft so it must be a knockoff copy. Sounds like its a waste of money for this one.

I bought this exact vice from Woodcraft and love it.  No lag in tightening or loosening the jaws.  The swivel mechanism locks and loosens within half a turn.  I made inserts for the jaws from scrap maple and recently added leather padding.  The vice has suficient clamping to support the rifle in virtually any position.  Like Dennis, I use this vice just for wood, not metal.

The versa vise from Garrett Wade is pretty good. Things that some may view as problems are that it comes with a tap. You have to drill and tap for one of the adjustment thumb screws. The thumb screws don't work. You can't get them tight enough to hold the vise in position. I swapped them out for bolts and use a cresent wrench to adjust it. Works great. The casting is a little crude, but it only affects the look, not function. I lined the jaws with wood and leather jaws. I just finished hand inletting a barrel in a stock blank. The stock never moved. I use it only for wood working. The question is how long will it last?

I bought a new Versa Vise about a year ago on _bay from the US company that is now making them.  I've had pretty good luck with it.  Seems like I paid around $50 for it too.  I've not had any of the issues mentioned above.

I bought the Parrot vise from Grizzley.  When it arrived there was that trouble with the nut and screw.  I just used Loctite on the nut and haven't had a problem since.  Works fine.  I made fitted teak pads for it and they work fine.  Other than woodwork, I've use it when draw filing barrels as well.  These obviously are Chinese imports but are serviceable and a lot cheaper than the Garret Wade version.  BTW wasn't one of the designs on the market done by our member holzwurm?

I also have this vice.  It's a $50. vice.  It works good for what I use it for, holding gunstocks. If I expected Wilton or Kurt quality I would have spent 10 times that much.

I have the little green one from Woodcraft. Works Great!!  I also have the Versa Vice from Garrett Wade with some adjustable leather lined inserts for tapered work. Tapping the screw was not bad... I discovered that tightening them by hand was more than I could do so I discovered that  a 6" wood clamp makes a good handle to tighten them!! Now it works great.  Remember you get what you pay for..and you can easily pay a lot more...but do you need it??
