Rifles of Colonial America Volume 1 #63 (I think that's the #) has several pages of images of perhaps Verner's most famous rifle still extant, as well as dimensions.  With that info you can determine any other dimensions you need and make a good drawing of the rifle.  My copy is loaded with calculations for all of the nuances that make this rifle special.  Many of the contributors to this site have built wonderful 'copies' of that rifle, as well as some by Schuler which closely parallels Verner's work.  There are also images in Kentucky Rifles by Lindsay, and Kentucky Rifles and Pistols 1750-1850 by Johnson.  Steel Canvas also has some colour images of the rifle to which I refer.

One thing I discovered while building an A Vernor rifle...... good Incised carving is MUCH more difficult than good relief carving.  At least the relief carving is a little more forgiving.  With incised carving, what you see, is what you get.  No going back and touching up.

Taylor has produced a FINE Vernor.  I don't think you'd do better getting advice from another.

       If you are really serious about getting the Verner rifle as correct as possible you should buy Dave Hanson's new book "The American Longrifle."  its art and evolution.  Dave is the owner of the original and it is one of his most prized guns.  Dave took all the photos in the book himself, he is very demanding and ended up using a 21 megapixil camera to get the high resolution photos that he ultimately used.  The book contains 23 detailed photos of the Verner rifle.  In the rear of the book is a reference to many of the pertinent measurements of all the rifles featured in the book (33 I believe).  This is the best set of photographs of this rifle available to the public.   I had the privilege of spending hours with the original before I made my copy.  Taylor's copy is very good especially for working only from photographs.  the original is a lot more sleek than what most builders end up with.   On this gun the Devil is indeed in the details...

Regarding the Verner rifle's architecture, if I were to build another for myself, I would disregard the length of pull and drop at the comb.  I built mine using Shumway's provided dimensions, and calculations from the images, and find that the rifle would fit my 6'2" frame better if I had another 3/8" of pull, and a comb just a little lower.  Mine cracks my cheek a little if I am not paying attention.

Joined recently and been lurking.  Attached find a link to a couple of rifles (and a trade gun) I built years ago.  Rifles are .50 cal, left one with a Bill Large swamped bbl. Center one with a Jim McLemore 1/3 octago bbl.  (Trade gun is a 20 ga. Jim McLemore  1/3 octagon. )  Hope the pic comes through. Mike Mullins
