Thanks for all the kind compliments. I wish I could take credit for the interesting coloration of the tip but that belongs to the bovine who grew the horn!
KYFlinter, Were the base ring, collar, and screw tip turned from the same horn as the body? I,m getting ready to try this. Hope mine turns out this good. Nice job.
Nate..... no, all those pieces came from another horn. You might be able to get a base ring from the same horn if it's long enough and you don't mind or need the length. Ditto on the turned tip, depending whether there's enough straight material there. I think a horn collar has to come from a donor horn, since it has to fit
over the neck of the project horn, but if you only have 1 horn, you could use antler or wood for the collar.
I had this project and several others in mind, so I picked up several horns at the CLA show. The original tip of this horn was thick and blunt, so I thought it would make a good candidate for a screw tip. Another horn I picked out of the pile was the biggest, straightest one I could find. I cut this horn up into a bunch of rings, plus some 2 inch sections to make jewelry boxes and the tip had plenty of size for turning the screw tip.
I had a lot of fun, figuring things out as I went. Good luck on your horn.
