Getting ready to attempt building my first rifle. I want to build a Southwest Virginia rifle particularly a Wythe County rifle from 1800-1825 era. Any suggestions?

I would suggest you use one of your ancestors rifles. I believe you have Honaker and Shaffer in your ancestral lines. Much easier to build something you have seen/handled than just by photos alone.

Mr. Glazener,

I thought about replicating the Shaffer buttstock from ebay but feel that might be a lot right off the bat for a first timer.

This one would be my choice for a first attempt.

the little Shaffer poor boy would be a good choice. I do like that piece. I wish the owner cared more for it.
