A few projects
« on: August 26, 2013, 07:14:52 AM »
Hello all,
I've been spending most of the summer working on a reproduction of Gen'l Washington's office marquee, which has been thoroughly documented here: https://www.facebook.com/FirstOvalOffice and by my colleague here: http://ranawayfromthesubscriber.blogspot.com/
But I've also been busy with my own projects, some of which I'd like to share.
A hunting shirt (and about three others), based on one owned by the City of Harrisburg.

Leather belt with forged iron buckle. These buckles appear both as forged, and die-struck examples in archaeology and extant pieces. My buckles are made in America, and match those used on Washington's camp valises. Square iron buckles like these can be found in sporting images, Diderot (pictured), and military use from c. 1750-83 (pictured is a Continental Army "New Model" box.

This image shows the progression that undyed leather takes as it ages. On the right, a new waist belt. The shot pouch at centre reflects its exposure to sunlight. The hunting bag has mellowed to a rich brown, as if absorbing the miles of woods it has walked through. The tooled knife sheath was dyed black, a bit of alchemy on its own.

Only the vibrant Paduk handle of this trade knife protrudes from the leather sheath I made for it. The sheath is based on examples from the Amsterdam wreck (1749), Royal Ontario Museum (c. 1800), and private collections. The designs are both tooled and stamped, and the seam along the back has been carefully rubbed down to make it discrete. Blue gartering allows for the sheath to be secured to a belt, hunting pouch, or worn about the neck.

All of these pictures, as well as information about original artifacts and other history, can be found at J Privott, Maker
Thanks for looking,
Joseph

Nice work...
I was wondering, what is that in figure 15? A knife block and steel?
