Ross long rifle...Zanesville Ohio
« on: September 08, 2022, 05:33:22 PM »
I have a rifle that my friend got at auction 12 years ago. Made by Elijah Ross, dated 1845. Has radically different geometric patch
box...It is in almost unfired condition, and has a note in the box that says...Kentucky squirrel rifle made for William Schultz about 1850 by E Ross of Zanesville Ohio   First gun ever shot  by B. V. H. Schultz - resting rifle on a rail fence and shooting at a mark, under the guidance of his Grandfather William Schultz. This was in the year 1872
I would like more info on Ross and would like to see pics of other rifles he made.

Here is something on James Ross.  I will look in my Ohio books and see if I can find Elijah Ross Rifle Photos.

Errata/corrections: The relevant captions in the article should all read "James Ross" (not "John Ross")

Stunner - Art Deco about 75 years early. Some things work and some don't - to me that gun works! I love the geometric design and inlay.

Thanks, I have never seen another one like it. The maker had a vivid imagination on this one

It is different, no doubt of that, but it has an elegant appearance, and condition is quite good. Wouldn't mind having it up on my wall. Thank you for posting these photos and giving some of its history.

I plan on shooting it. I have to get some balls, and powder. I have caps. The bore is shiny and not worn at all. The whole gun looks like almost new.  I just have not been thinking about it much lately.
