Question on Goat Horns
« on: August 08, 2013, 08:14:26 PM »
I have a small horn off a domestic goat.  Can goat horn be worked the same way you would cow horn?  Will scraping smooth the surface?  Just looking at the outside, the surface near the tip appears stringy and there are a lot of ridges that circle the horn.  Growth rings?.  The inside seems very smooth. I was thinking of making a small priming horn out of it.

Anyone had experience with goat horn?  Thanks for all suggestions.

I do not know about working them, but i have a small goat priming horn that is my favorite.  If the vender is there I am going to buy another one this weekend at Crockett Days.

Get out the files.  Goat horns are usually too rough to start out scraping.  Other than that, it is a lot like working cow or buffalo horn.

I have made a Shofar and a few priming horns from goat horn, Its been a while but I worked it the same as cow horn, but do remember that it did seem to be a bit more willowy near the tip and left more material there. Oh yeah, it also stinks much more than cow horn, much more pungent!

I found one!! Nothing fancy.

My wife and I sold our home and will be living out of box's for a couple months, with everything scattered between two storage bins, a garage where we are staying and a tarp covering things in the woods at the new site. Its a marathon to do anything.

Thanks fellows.  The wife has had the PC tied up, so I decided to go on and try scraping the goat horn.  It worked but left ripples.  Actually looks pretty cool.  I'll post pictures later.
