My first pipe tomahawk
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:44:44 AM »
This piece has a number of firsts for me.  First pipe tomahawk, first time engraving something besides practice, first try at silver wire inlay.  Building this hawk was a lot of fun.

The pipe head is a bronze casting by Reeves Goehring, from an original that was found at the site of Fort Greenville.  I added the steel bit. It's a press fit, fluxed first, hammered together, then soldered.  The "points" under the head and the mouthpiece are poured pewter.  The incised carving design and the "points" are from 2 originals pictured in Accouterments I.  The clean-out hole plug is turned deer antler.  The handle was stained with home-made aqua fortis, then finished with Chambers oil finish.

I want to say thanks to all the members here on ALR that freely post their how-to's, ideas, secrets, etc.  I learned about all this stuff from you guys.  THANKS!

-Ron

I'd say that it came out very well. Wire inlay is one of those skills you'll use for many different things.

Ron,
That is a very nice hawk.  You pulled off the incise carving on the rounded haft very nicely.
