Front Swivel On Fusil De Chase
« on: October 02, 2013, 11:33:24 PM »
I have a Fusil de chase Lock stock and Barrel that needs to be built.
I have all the parts but am not sure about the mounting of a swivel on the front of the trigger guard.
TOW is showing a swivel that they say mounts on the thick lug at the front of your trigger bow.

Has anyone ever mounted a swivel on the front lug of the trigger bow on a Fusil de chase.

Sum ting wong. I don't think they have a lug/boss for a swivel. You need a screw in button behind the guard wrist extension.

I got a button but would like to have a swivel mounted in front of the trigger guard.

Why they list one and say it will work I don't understand.

Just trying to see if anyone knows what they mean and how one would be mounted the way they say.  Might be a mistake in the write up but then again maybe they know something that I am not seeing or understand.

You're refering to a M1777 french musket trigger guard.

In the PDF TOW shows a front and rear swivel.  The rear one that would go in front of a trigger guard is smaller than the front swivel.
The smaller swivel is listed as swivel-4-n.
I found a Swivel Post Stud, 7/16" ball head drilled for narrow swivel    Swivel Post Stud, 7/16" ball head drilled for narrow swivel.  This is at TOW.
I am wondering if this might work to mount a swivel in front of trigger bow on the Fusil de chase.

Therer is no metal to install a sling swivel in the front of the Tulle guard.  You COULD use your stud by drilling a hole through the forward guard extension and silversoldering it in place, but it sure wouldn't be HC.  That is to say, I've never seen one like that. The correct system for a Tulle is to mount a button with around a 5/8 - 3/4" flattish/domed head behind the guard and make a slit in your leather sling to go over the button.  I believe TOW sells a lug that pierces the front guard extension and perhaps is riveted on the inside surface.  There is no wood in the Tulle lower forearm to receive a screw and even mounting the guard with one is folly.  All IMMHO!

Thanks to everyone for your insight to my problem.
I will go with a button behind the trigger guard as you suggest.

How about one of those detachable slings that Leatherman sells. They just slip over the butt and barrel with no need to add any incorrect hardware.

I can make a sling that is not attached to the rifle.  That is no problem and may be the way I go.

I have a friend who hunts with a Fusil and he put a sling on it which is handy if you kill a deer or turkey and need both hands to get the game out of the woods.  He also add a rear sight which he says is great for shooting a round ball.
I will add a rear sight to the rifle I am having built because my old eyes are not what they use to be.
