Ready for Scrimshaw

I finished building this horn today. It's now ready for scrimshaw. It's a New England horn with elements from several New England horns shown in Tom Grinslade's book. I'm making it for Dave Dolliver who will put it with a gun he's making and a bag by Mike Nesbitt. I'm not sure who else is contributing to the project, but it will be given to Dave's brother. I intend to have it done by the Gunmakers Fair.

 Good start, very sleek, great choice of horn. Looks like it is cut for an applied tip or is that it?

Thanks Tim but I didn't choose the horn. As for the tip, this seems to be a common feature on the New England horns I'v looked at. I don't have a lot of examples to use for research. They seem to have clunky tips to me. This is about as sleek as I felt I could get away with.

I got the scrimshaw done on this horn today, well OK this weekend, and thought I'd post the pictures before I got the chance to screw them up with the aquafortis. I also noticed I don't have the olive branch in his one claw yet. Aint pictures great??

OK. Here's the finished horn. It's dyed with aquafortis, sealed with shelac, and then dulled with black Kiwi shoe polish.

Yep! Screwed up! Main has an e at the end. Wish I had seen that sooner,

 Well done Steve. I wouldn't worry about the spelling error, it fits right in, like you planed it that way.

Fortunately for me Dave laughed when he saw it here last night. It will have an E at the end of Main one way or the other. Many of the old horns have letters crammed in that were apparently left out. Nothing new. Just very embarrassing. Pride comes before the fall!

I'd leave it alone if it were mine.  Mark Twain said that you can't trust a man who only knows one way to spell a word.

Several knowledgeable friends have suggested putting a lower case e at the end of Main. That was what I had thought of and suggested but Dave wants a skinny E put in the space. It is his horn and he's the boss.
