Maker's mark question.
« on: October 09, 2013, 03:24:33 PM »
There is a well made smooth rifle on Gunbroker that is listed as unsigned.  One picture of the off side of the breech shows two marks.  One is a square cartouche with a G inside it.  Can't make out the other mark.  Almost looks like a Fleur-de-lis in a circle.  Out of curiousity does anyone recognize this mark.

At the risk of being a smart a++, the only  makers mark I know of comes in a bottle.   Ron

It's a good possibility that the G is the barrel makers mark, Getz barrel co.
I don't know about the other

That is a good possibility, but I would hope the barrel maker would put his mark on the bottom flat. Some builders might not want their rifles with marks showing.  Sort of like stamping "Blackpowder only" on the side flat of a fancy rifle.  ;)  I'm just curious because my Bivins rifle has his silver "IB" cartouche in the same spot as this gun is marked, and no name on the top of the barrel.  It could be called unsigned by someone unfamiliar with his mark.  This gun might be a sleeper deal for someone interested in a 50in. barreled smooth rifle.  Not for me, I would need a stool to be able to load it!!

The "G" touchmark you might see on one of our barrels was put there because the buyer wanted it.   It is not a standard thing
that is done to all of our barrels........Don

Do you mean a "G" like this?  This is a Getz barrel on my A. Verner inspired rifle.  And I'm proud to have it there.

That is the mark in question.  Mystery solved.  If you wanted there then that is where it should be.

Don:  Thanks for the answer.

About that "G" touchmark.   It was somewhat difficult to get a good iimpression.   We have a magnetic chuck to clamp  the
barrel on, keeps it from bouncing around when you hit that punch.   It takes kind of a feel to get the punch perfectly flat on
the barrel, then keep it steady while you gave it a mighty swat with a 4 pound sledge..........Don

Perchance, is EC121 a Wood Badge course number?

EC121 is the airplane I spent 1000hrs. on during my time in Uncle Sam's Air Force.

Hard not to move when you swing the hammer.  I tried to stamp one number on something the other day and messed it up.  Has to be traumatic to screw up on an expensive barrel.
