Hello,
Two other essentials are "the Kentucky Rifle Hunting Pouch" by Madison Grant and "Sketches of hunting pouches, powder horns and accoutrements from southern Appalachia" by Jim Webb
Good luck!

Eta: go on contemporarymakers.blogspot.com, search "hunting pouch". Prepare thy brain for awesomeness.

What kind of shooting pouches for what kind/s of a gun or guns and what time period do you want to study?  Oh, let me warn you the earlier you go, the more you have to rely on original paintings as so few original examples still exist.

I bought this book when it first came out.  “The Kentucky Rifle Hunting Pouch
by Madison Grant.”  I was a little disappointed in it because most of the pouches were later than the era I wanted circa 1740-1770.  Still, it is a good book and shows paintings to back up the info.  Here’s a link:

I hope Chuck Barrows and James Rogers chime in here, but in the meanwhile, treat yourself to viewing James' FINE pouches and game bags.  Oh, you MAY have to hit your “F5” button to get the link to open as I did:  http://fowlingpiece.blogspot.com/

Don't count on Chuck, the boy done gone and got himself busy!

The best advice I can give as a 30 year bag maker is to contact Conner Prairie and check on taking one of Ken Scott's classes on bag making. I did and have not regretted it one bit!

Even though I have a lifetime of experiance, I still learned a thing or 2!

David,
Perhaps THE BEST book to buy when starting out is not a book on pouches, but rather hand stitching and it is  “The Art of Hand Sewing Leather” by Al Stohlman
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2202193.The_Art_of_Hand_Sewing_Leather

I made quite a few cartridge boxes and pouches before I got the book and I STILL refer back to it three decades later.

Thank all of ya'll for the helpful info.

I do have the book on hand sewing leather. Excellent
book!  I failed to say that I also have Webbs book too.

Does Grants book have color or b&w photos?

Would love to take that class but if I remember correctly
it takes place while I am working. Wish I could though.

Black and white.

At least two of the buckskinner books have articles on hunting pouches. The one in Book III is by Madison Grant, though, and might not have much that his book doesn't already cover - I don't have the book so I can't compare them. The other article is by Steven Laliof. I think it is in Book V.
