Nailing down a fore stock wear plate
« on: November 01, 2013, 05:06:15 PM »
I have on occasion had to use wear plates to hide indiscretions with ramrod drill  run out. I have often wondered How long do you need to make the nails to get the job done. I found an example of the nail length on an original that  shows them to be much longer than I had  made mine.  Note the end of the middle upper nail having been turned by a steel rod in the place of the ram rod to keep the nails out of the ram rod hole. Its coming back out at the upper right area from its starting point. I would guess to make that turn it would have to be 5/8" long. Most of mine have never been over 3/8"

Dave, how many nails, and what length?

See original work.

Kuntz again. He bought inlay nails by the pound.

It appears some of the nails would enter the RR hole. I wish we could borescope the RR hole.

I make my nails with a ringshank for better holding.

See this posting for the concept: http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=15.0

This one is attached with very small screws and the countersink is just enough to catch the screw head. The rest is filed off. The right way, probably not. Neither was the drill out! Just my remedy.

Yes I did sweat the screws exiting in inappropriate places! I lucked out tho!

If you have access to nautical supply houses (a ship chandlery )  you can sometimes find solid brass escutcheon pins that work well. At least they will cut down on some of the hand work in forming the heads.
