long tang shapes

Hello everyone. I don't post on here alot, but I like digging thru the old post for info but I have'nt found anything on this. I am getting ready to start on an iron mounted southern gun and I want to put a long tang on it. I shaped my last one like a lollipop that you see quite often on these guns but I was wondering what other shapes may have been used? About all that I have seen is either the lollipop or staight. Did they use any other shape? Just looking for some ideas. Thinking about trying something different. Just not sure what. Thanks,Dew

Here is one I did a while back... http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=23924.0
If you do a search here on southern or southern mountain rifles you will find more. Also the North Carolina schools of longrifles book is a great reference

One popular style of tang that I have seen on many southern mountain rifles is the "spear" or "pointed" shape. Most are not extremely long but the one on this Mathew Gillespie rifle is 3 7/8".

Others often are much wider in the mid-section giving the tang a "spear" shape.

Another lollipop style looks much like a regular flared tang with a smaller straight section coming off the end of the flare then at the end there is the standard round lollipop/dolls head or even a heart shaped end. Here is an example:

On this particular one the flared "fan tail" is not so obvious but on others that I have seen the flared part is wider, can't find a photo of one right now.

Thanks guys for the replies. Cmac, thats a fine looking rifle. I had thought about trying to do one of those over the comb tangs. Is that a 2 pc. job? Just don't know if I got the time or patients. It takes me long enough to build one of these things. I still may try it yet though.Your rifle is simular to what I had in mind. I have a pecatonica tenn. stock and I was going to pour a nose cap for it and probably use a late ketland on it. Got a cresent butt plate and a cheveron guard although I might try to make a guard for it.

Dennis, I appreciate the pics. I kinda like the heart shaped end on the lollipop. I shaped a tang like a beaver tale on a southern gun once but I don't know if it really fit the style.  Hmm decisions decisions
