I finally decided to make some time in the shop for one of my projects so I started finishing the parts for my Gillespie. Here are a couple of photographs of the completed triggers. They were made entirely by hand from 1018 mild and 1085 spring steel using a few photographs from a set of original Gillespie triggers. All the parts from the 1018 steel have been case hardened and tempered.

Wow Dave, I love them. Something about nice, smooth steel. I.m now inletting an old set of triggers into a "southern"
mountain gun (for a lack of a better term) They are single lever and the way they now work one will have to set the trigger
before cocking the gun. I could put a small screw in it to stop the main spring, not sure if I want to bother doing it.....Don

Thanks for all the comments. I could not of done this project without the assistance and guidance of Dennis Glazener. he supplied pictures, emails and I got to see the actual gun while back east this spring.

Acer, Rifle should be complete by the end of October, or a week or two later.

Rolf, The triggers were cut and filed out of 1018 billets. Emphasis on the word filing!

I am polishing the lock and hope to have it engraved and hardened this week. A bit of oil on the stock and I should have a new .40 caliber rifle to break in at out Thanksgiving shoot in November. Stay tuned.

Do any of yo guys know how common the round pepper corn head on the adjustment screw was back in the day? And, was it at all regional? I have a set of triggers that I got in a parts set from a rifle that burned in a house fire, that very much resembles the beautiful triggers David shows here. The buttplate is definitely a southern mountain design.

Earl Lanning dated the original Mathew Gillespie rifle that these triggers belong to, as circa 1810. He owns a close to identical unsigned Gillespie with the same style adjustment screw.

By the way, the screw is gone from these triggers and I failed to tell David that all of them I have seen on other Gillespie rifles has the large part of the head knurled (or filed as such).

Looking at William Ivey's book there are several Gillespie and Gillespie attributed rifles that you can make out the profile of the trigger adjustment screw. That is where my inspiration came from for the one on the posted triggers. I will make sure I knurl the screw on the triggers I am working on for you Dennis.
