New Bag and Horn
« on: November 01, 2013, 08:14:57 PM »
Hi Folks:

It's been a while since I posted anything, and I thought I would share a project I just completed for Rick Sheets.

The bag is taken directly from an original Guilford County, NC. piece.  I  made one other like this, and thought I would not do any more, but Rick persuaded me to try it one more time....

Made from soft calf, and lined with hemp. The overlay trim is veg. tan goat, and the 1" strap is cowhide. The inside lip is a wrapped binding in very light calf. The bag is a bit over 8" wide by 7.5" deep. There is a hanging inside pocket for balls / patches, etc. The flap is backed with an additional layer of calf. Main seam is fully welted.

The horn was made by Billy Griner (aka "Down South"), and aged a bit by me. It is a beautiful applied tip, single band horn. The base plug appears to be maple, although I may be wrong.

The pick and brush set was made by me. The brush is brass, and the tip is turned from horn. The pick is made from spring steel, ie. piano wire, and is very durable.

Thoughts, comments, criticisms, or other colorful insights are always welcome.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,
This is breathtaking! I love southern stuff and this combination of your Guilford County bag and Billy's banded horn is just what I wanted!
Now I need a new Thaddeus Gardner rifle to go with it. (See rifle #57 in NC Schools of Longrifles, Bill Ivey, author.)

Hi folks:

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you all like the bag, and the set.

Ed, I did not get Billy to make the horn; Rick did that. Billy does make some nice pieces when he gets time.

Hopefully, I will be more involved with my work in the future. The past couple of years made it hard to get much done.

Thanks again,

Jeff

A lot of stitching, but it led to a really nice setup.  Good job on putting it all together.
