This is a standard type of trigger found on original and repro Hawken rifles.
The fact that the trigger must be set before cocking the lock indicates a
poor installation or a rear trigger spring with too much tension forcing the
sear out of position. Is there a makers name on the trigger assembly or
the lock?

L&R lock, no name on the trigger. I tried adjusting the screw behind the set trigger for the large spring but without enough tension the trigger would not fire the lock.

That condition sounds like a too deep or badly angled full cock notch in the tumbler.
Be careful if you change that parts because the opposite extreme can occur and a
too light condition is as bad as too heavy.
